SOSE – Studies of Society and Environment
SOSE encourages students to become active participants in their world. Through the teaching of SOSE students are provided with many opportunities to develop the attributes of life long learners and develop understandings of different cultures and diversities.
Through SOSE students use their fascination with people and places to make sense of their world by investigating societies and environments. They investigate ideas, events, places, cultures and systems to make connections to their own experiences.
They understand that societies and environments involve concepts related to:
  • events, people’s contributions, and the stories of local communities
  • features of local natural, social and built environments
  • the organisation of groups in local communities to meet basic needs, and share values and common interests
  • local systems that are used to govern and make rules and laws.

Students gain awareness of the history and diversity of lifestyles of Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islander people throughout Australia. They recognise the ways in which Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islander people are distinctive and are connected to other people and to specific places. They then consider their own opinions, experiences and understandings to develop respect for, and to value Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islander people and cultures.
At Coolum State School teachers utilize a “Learner Centred Approach” when delivering the SOSE curriculum. They engage in a range of activities which promote active citizenship such as:
  • Creating understandings of change and continuities from ancient to modern times.
  • Becoming environmentalists by having designated clean up areas. Students also are provided with a designated area for a self sustaining vegetable garden. The produce from this garden is then used in the special education cooking classes.
  • Learning to make informed choices and take actions that support their own and others well being. Students at Coolum are encouraged to demonstrate an understanding of human rights and to activity participate in activities that promote this. In 2007 students were encouraged to bring in old toys in small boxes which were then shipped to 3rd world countries. The students were made aware of the plight of the children who live in poverty and some of them decided they would be ‘active citizens’ and help others.
  • Developing knowledge and understandings with an emphasis on the processes and human experiences associated with citizenship, government, economy and business.

Students demonstrate evidence of their learning through:
