Guidance Officer PDF Print E-mail

In schools the Guidance Officer is a support person involved with initiating, supporting and enhancing programs.

As well as assisting students with difficulties in learning, adjustment to school routines and welfare issues, Guidance Officers also assist with information on subject selection and career choices.

This leads to many and varied duties largely determined by negotiation between the Guidance Officer and the School Community. As a Guidance Officer I act as a consultant, facilitator and personal counsellor in both group and individual settings providing a service to all members of the school community.

EDUCATIONAL COUNSELLING.

Guidance Officers can assist with the educational counselling of students through help with:

  • Educational Adjuctment Profiles
  • Individual Education Plans
  • Program Meetings
  • Psychometric Assessment and Reporting
  • Study Skills
  • Time Management

PERSONAL COUNSELLING.

Guidance Officers can assist students and families in addressing a range of personal issues including:

  • Behaviour Management strategies
  • Family Crisis
  • Grief
  • Harrassment and Bullying
  • Personal relationships
  • Self Esteem
  • Social Skills
  • Substance Abuse
  • Trauma

This is often through referral to other appropriate agencies.

MAKING AN APPOINTMENT.

Appointments are available through a number of means:

  • Contact office administration to schedule an appointment time.
  • Contact Guidance Officer directly to organise a time.
  • Referrals can be made through Special Needs Committee.
